Exactly 25 years after the very first marriage for people of the same sex, we will celebrate this on April 1! Are you LGBTQ+ and would you like to marry your beloved in front of the world on this special anniversary? Then this is your chance.
On April 1, 2001, exactly at midnight, the then mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, married four same-sex couples. The event received worldwide attention and many other countries followed by opening marriage to everyone.
Not just a celebration
Meanwhile, equal rights for LGBTQ+ people are under increasing pressure again. Therefore, the 25th anniversary is not just a celebration. It is also an opportunity to show that Amsterdam remains the city where everyone can be themselves and how important equal rights are.
