The Executive Board wants to allocate 4 million euros for the construction of a hydrogen network in the port, called H2avennet. This network allows us to transport hydrogen to companies to make their processes more sustainable. Hydrogen is a clean energy source that makes the port greener and helps reduce CO₂ emissions.

The development of a so-called hydrogen economy often stalls because companies only invest in hydrogen when infrastructure exists, while infrastructure like this hydrogen network is only built when there is demand. By investing ourselves, we try to solve this problem and help get the hydrogen economy going.

Why hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a clean energy source. The hydrogen network transports hydrogen from producers and import terminals to companies in the port that need this energy. This allows industrial processes to switch from natural gas to hydrogen and enables cleaner production. With this network, we can reduce CO₂ emissions and make the port greener. This is attractive for international trade and investments.

What will it cost?

The construction of the network costs about 40 million euros. It is being developed in collaboration with Port of Amsterdam by Firan, a subsidiary of the energy network company Alliander.

What’s next?

It is important that enough companies and producers join H2avennet. This depends on the availability and price of hydrogen. There are many industrial users in the port who want to become more sustainable. Firan is currently working on a final design and agreements with future users. They aim to make an investment decision by the end of 2026.
