In the new year, Amsterdam continues to work on accessibility and livability in the city. The city is changing and growing. Roads need maintenance, cables and pipelines must be laid underground, and there are also competitions, events, and demonstrations. Most works are planned well in advance. We take you through the most prominent road works of 2026.

2026 will be a different year than 2025. We expect less congestion on weekdays, but more frequent congestion on weekends.

Disruptions in the city in 2026

  • The disruptions around Amsterdam are less severe than last year. Outside the summer holidays, there are no long-term works on the Ring A10 or other highways near the city.
  • However, we expect almost every weekend disruptions due to works by Zuidasdok, near the A10 South, A4, and sometimes the connection A10 West - A10 South, or on the A9. The impact of these works can also be felt in other places in and outside the city. Due to traffic detours, there is also a higher chance of traffic jams in the city.
  • There are not fewer events in the city, but no very large ones like SAIL or the Op de Ring festival. However, World Pride takes place in Amsterdam. This makes the Pride event busier and longer than usual. We also expect more simultaneous (music) events at the ArenA, AFAS Live, and Ziggo Dome.

Works in the city

In 2026, work will take place in many locations. This involves maintenance of roads, cables and pipelines, bridges, and tracks. We also continue to work on traffic safety and energy transition. Some major projects:

  • The works on the Oranje Loper continue steadily and will last until 2028.
  • In the East district, work continues on the Middenweg and Linnaeusstraat.
  • On the Gooiseweg between A10 and A9, works take place between April 1 and September 30. We close a maximum of 1 lane per direction at a time.
  • We are redesigning Van Diemenstraat. For this, the street will probably be closed to car traffic for about a year. Emergency services and public transport can pass the works.
  • Like last year, we close Amstelveenseweg near the A10 South during the summer holidays due to construction works of Zuidasdok. The open exits near Amstelveenseweg remain open except for a few weekends. Nearby, there are also works on De Boelelaan.
  • In March 2026, IJdoornlaan will be closed for 3 weeks near Sportpark to make the intersection safer. Shortly after, between April 12 and 27, the province will work on the N247 between A10 North and Het Schouw. The road will be closed then.
