We are holding an international competition for the design of the National Slavery Museum. The new museum will be located on the Kop van het Java Island. Design teams from home and abroad are invited to create a design for a building and a park. The architectural competition is organized by the municipality together with the National Slavery Museum Foundation.

The National Slavery Museum will be a place of meeting, reflection, and connection. With the competition, we invite designers from all over the world to shape this meaningful place.

Past and Present

The museum will tell the underexposed story of the trans-Atlantic and Indo-Oceanic slavery past and its impact on the present.

Alderman Touria Meliani (Art & Culture): “This way we build together a shared future and a place where everyone is welcome to learn, remember, and come together.”

Call to Design Teams

We are looking for a design team with an architect, a landscape architect, and one or more people with knowledge of the Dutch slavery past. At a later stage, we will select an execution team for the construction and the development of the park. We explicitly encourage collaborations between experienced firms and young designers. The design of the building and the park must fit the history and significance of the location. Additionally, it should become a pleasant place where people can meet.

Evaluation: What do we look for?

The museum has a broad social character. During the evaluation, we mainly look at whether the design is accessible and inviting to a broad audience, whether it makes the different groups visible, and offers space for different perspectives on history.

Registration

Registration for the competition is possible from Thursday, February 12 until Tuesday, April 7 via International Competition National Slavery Museum. On this website, you will also find more information about the competition procedure.

The establishment of the National Slavery Museum is made possible in part by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
