Housing construction in Amsterdam is on the rise. In the first half of 2025, over 3,500 new homes are under construction, plus 660 temporary homes. This is almost double compared to the same period last year, when it was about 1,773 homes.
This year, we aim to build a total of 7,500 homes and will do everything we can to achieve that.
Many affordable homes
A large part of the new construction focuses on affordable homes. The construction of 1,123 social rental homes has started, of which 850 are corporate homes. The construction of mid-rent homes is also increasing. By mid-2025, 1,177 are already under construction, more than in the entire year of 2023 (314 homes) and 2024 (1,006 homes).
Affordable purchase homes
In the segment of affordable purchase homes (up to € 405,000), 168 homes are under construction. Additionally, in the first half of the year, we started building 667 private sector rental homes and 390 purchase homes of € 405,000 or more.
New construction in percentages
In total, the new housing construction in the first half of 2025 consists of:
- 33 percent mid-rent homes
- 32 percent social rental homes
- 19 percent private sector rental homes
- 11 percent purchase homes above € 405,000
- 5 percent affordable purchase homes
Outlook
Together with partners, we are committed to building as many homes as possible and working towards a future-proof housing stock. In the Annual Report on Housing Construction 2025, we will analyze the housing construction production in detail. This will be released in the spring of 2026.
