In the heart of Apeldoorn, a special place opened this week for residents who want to reflect on loss: the Mourning and Celebrating Greenhouse at Raadhuisplein. Alderman Anja Prins officially opened it on Thursday, December 18. The greenhouse will be there until December 28 to share memories, light a candle, or talk with volunteers.
The concept of the mourning and celebrating greenhouse is rapidly growing in the Netherlands. The first greenhouse was in Amsterdam in 2021. Last year, there were already thirteen locations. For Apeldoorn, this is the first time residents have this opportunity. Initiators Sjoukje Roem and Nicole van den Bos want to create a place where mourning is allowed in any form.
Visitors can write a personal message in the guestbook, light a candle, hang a ribbon, or simply sit in silence inside the greenhouse. It is intended for everyone dealing with loss, for example, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, loss of health, work, or a home. Volunteers are present daily to offer a listening ear or answer questions.
December is a sensitive month
According to the initiators, December is a difficult period for many people. While holidays are cozy for some, others feel the absence of a loved one more intensely. The initiators want to provide an accessible place for support, silence, and conversation during this time.
This greenhouse offers residents a warm and accessible place to reflect on loss. I think this is a wonderful initiative and an enrichment of our city center in December. I also find it very nice to see how many volunteers contribute, said Alderman Prins during the opening.
Good idea? Do something with it!
The Municipality of Apeldoorn supported the initiative with the citizen initiatives subsidy, making the greenhouse accessible to everyone. Do you have a good idea to make Apeldoorn even more beautiful, social, or attractive? Learn more about citizen initiatives.
