The Municipality of Arnhem has established a new vision for food and urban agriculture: Arnhemse Kost. This vision focuses on a healthy, sustainable food environment for all Arnhemmers. The city builds on the more than 150 initiatives that are already active in the field of food and urban agriculture, from community gardens to picking forests. But the vision goes further: in addition to urban agriculture, Arnhem also focuses on nature-inclusive agriculture, the protein transition, and sustainable consumption.
By stimulating these initiatives and collaboration, numerous benefits arise for the city: a stronger local economy, more biodiversity, a healthy living environment, and places where Arnhemmers can meet each other.
Deputy Nature, Eva van Esch: “With Arnhemse Kost, we bring people, nature, and food closer together. Our vision goes beyond just urban agriculture: we are also working on nature-inclusive agriculture, the protein transition, and sustainable consumption. Arnhem consciously chooses a healthy, sustainable food environment. I am proud that together with so many residents, schools, farmers, and organizations, we have initiated this broad movement.”
The municipality supports existing and new initiatives, among other things by planting picking trees and shrubs in public spaces, stimulating collaborations, and increasing awareness. Arnhem wants residents to know where their food comes from, to be aware of biodiversity, and to care for a healthy soil. In this way, the city contributes to a resilient food system that is better for people, animals, and nature. Read more on the Urban Agriculture page.
