Since 2023, residents of Arnhem have been able to apply for subsidies for greening their gardens or installing rain barrels. This subsidy scheme was set to end in 2025 but has been extended due to its success. Residents who want to green their surroundings can now apply continuously.
Almost 260 applications last year
The Green-Blue Initiatives subsidy scheme provides room for ideas to green the city and prepare gardens, houses, and business parks for the changing climate. It is also possible to propose ideas for sustainable food cultivation. Last year alone, nearly 260 applications were received from residents and entrepreneurs.
Alderman for Green and Climate Adaptation Cathelijne Bouwkamp: “We are working hard on an Arnhem that is ready for the climate of the future. But we cannot do this alone; we must collaborate with the city. We see that residents and entrepreneurs want to green. With this subsidy, we can help them. And we will continue to do so.”
Encouraging residents and businesses to green
The Municipality of Arnhem greens much of the public space, but most of the city is private. This subsidy scheme encourages residents and businesses to green or take other measures against the changing climate. Previously, 1 million euros was allocated for the Green-Blue Initiatives subsidy scheme. Last year, this budget was supplemented with 20ac 500,000. This money is used for the extension.
