The construction of the new Cultural Center Arnhem-South is one step closer. The city council proposes Kronenburgsingel 20 in Arnhem as the most suitable location for the cultural center in Arnhem-South. This new location will provide better distribution of cultural offerings for all Arnhem residents. The municipality will investigate how to develop this site and will engage with local residents.

Cathelijne Bouwkamp, alderman for culture: “With the new cultural center in Arnhem-South, culture will literally come closer to many Arnhem residents. While our cultural offerings are currently mainly found in Arnhem-North, Kronenburg will soon be a new place where Arnhem residents of all ages can come into contact with art. A beautiful and important step for both Arnhem-South and the cultural sector in our city.”

More culture in Arnhem-South

With the creative breeding ground Jacobiberg and the new cultural center, Arnhem-South is making up ground in terms of culture. The new cultural center will have space for visual arts and (non-commercial) film with an educational program. It will be a place to meet with space for hospitality and terrace options that fit well with the greenery and outdoor space. This concept partly results from conversations with residents, creative makers, and cultural and social partners.

To already ensure more culture in Arnhem-South, we are investigating whether there is room for a temporary cultural program with film and visual arts, for example at Groningensingel 1245. Jacobiberg already offers (practice) space for pop music, a pop music school, and other cultural activities such as theater and music events. The (Z)Uitnacht will also take place here on January 10.

Most suitable location

The location at Kronenburgsingel 20 proved to be the most suitable spot after municipal research. Currently, the Kamera Express photo store is located there. This location is already owned by the municipality and is financially the best fit. The new cultural center also provides a lively use for the edge of the Kronenburg neighborhood.

The municipality will now further explore the possibilities at the Kamex location. Three options are being considered: a cultural center with approximately 80 homes, a cultural center with approximately 40 homes, and a cultural center without homes. Cathelijne Bouwkamp: “The first step has been taken. The next step is to work out what fits best at this location. We will also engage with local residents and other stakeholders to ultimately arrive at a design that does justice to the neighborhood.”
