With support from the municipality, the province, and the restoration fund, the old brick factory in the heart of Meinerswijk has been restored. Owner Frank van Jaarsveld worked for over six years on the LEEFFabriek, with great care and love for the buildings history. As a lasting memory of this extensive restoration, the municipality of Arnhem donates an artwork.
Alderman for Heritage Bob Roelofs: “In the green surroundings of Meinerswijk stands the brick factory, a place with a rich history. Workers once worked here daily in the hot ovens. With great respect for that history, the building has been renovated, and as a municipality, we are very pleased with that. As a token of appreciation, we therefore donate this special artwork.”
An Artwork with Meaning
The artwork was created by Erik Vos and will be placed on top of the buildings chimney. During the restoration, the chimney was raised three meters with the idea of creating a connection between heaven and earth. The artist continued this concept in his design: a reflective sphere symbolizing the universe. Frank van Jaarsveld: “The reflective sphere can be seen from a great distance. The artwork fits perfectly with the LEEFFabriek. A wonderful gift that we are very happy with.”
From Brick Factory to LEEFFabriek
The LEEFFabriek was built in 1928 and was for many years a place where bricks were produced. Today it is a meeting location and retreat center where people can come to Meinerswijk to meet, train, or relax. The LEEFFabriek is for inspiring and connecting meetings and overnight stays for groups. During the restoration, the historical elements were preserved as much as possible. For example, the old ovens have now been converted into rooms for overnight stays.
