The Municipality of Arnhem signs the Plant Based Treaty. With this step, Arnhem commits to a healthy and sustainable living environment. Arnhem invests heavily in promoting plant-based and local food. The municipality does this through a vision and implementation plan with many ideas and by signing a City Deal. Examples include vegan tours, encouraging fields that produce plant-based food, and assisting volunteers in producing fruit trees. Urban agriculture initiatives are also rapidly emerging in Arnhem.
Alderman Eva van Esch: “Ten years ago it was still very strange to think we would move towards a plant-based future. Today, the council quietly agreed that this is the future. We now know how good and tasty plant-based cooking can be. With this treaty, we further encourage that. For an even more beautiful Arnhem!”
An important part of a future-proof living environment is a food environment where healthy choices are natural. That means more space for plant-based food, less pressure on the climate, and a food system that works for people, animals, and nature. By signing, Arnhem joins cities like Amsterdam, Groningen, Nijmegen, and Haarlem.
The Plant Based Treaty calls worldwide attention to a sustainable food system that protects ecosystems. More than 255,000 citizens, scientists, politicians, and thousands of organizations and companies have signed the declaration.
Arnhem joins because the core principles of the treaty fit well with the citys course. No further pressure on nature and the environment. Actively promoting plant-based nutrition. And restoring ecosystems. This approach aligns with existing Arnhem policies, such as the Green Vision, the Biodiversity Agenda, the Animal Welfare Vision, the Environmental Vision, and the recently adopted Arnhemse Kost vision.
In the coming years, Arnhem will continue working on concrete steps that fit the possibilities of the city and its residents. These actions are included in the Implementation Agenda Arnhemse Kost 2025–2026 and focus on the municipal organization, regional collaborations, entrepreneurs, hospitality, and residents.
