Breda is growing and attracting more residents. Therefore, the municipality is making conscious choices about the layout of the city to ensure that public spaces remain livable and future-proof. With the new vision for public space 2040 Breda, City in a Park - a story everywhere, the municipality opts for a city that invites movement, meeting, and relaxation. With room for both tranquility and liveliness. Meaningful places, greenery within walking distance, and a public space that is safe, clean, and recognizable form the foundation.
The vision shows how Breda is developing into a green, accessible, and future-proof city. Meaningful places such as squares, parks, and meeting spots will be preserved, strengthened, and added where possible. There is extra attention for greenery within slipper distance, play and exercise areas for all ages, and routes that make the city experienceable. At the same time, standardization in material use and layout ensures unity, recognizability, and efficient management.
Five focal points from the vision:
• Green close to home: everyone should be able to see greenery from home (at least 3 trees), live in a green street (30% shade and planting), and be within 200 meters of a small park or other public green space. This so-called 3-30-200 rule helps to achieve that goal.
• Movement and meeting in the neighborhood: safe, accessible streets and routes for young and old, with space to exercise, play, and meet each other.
• Smart management: data, technology, and a good balance between above and below ground make maintenance more efficient and future-proof.
• Room for tranquility and liveliness: alongside quiet places such as parks, there is room for lively activities and events.
• Working together: municipality, residents, businesses, and organizations work together on layout, management, and maintenance.
Love for Breda
The alderman Jeroen Bruijns (Public Space) also ventured into Breda to engage with people. In the city center, the Haagse Beemden, and Ulvenhout, a striking artwork was installed: a car with a large tree inside. As a symbol of where public space is struggling.
