The Municipality of Breda is preparing the repair of the historic quay wall at Nieuwe Prinsenkade. Inspections show that the wall no longer meets safety requirements. To keep the quay safe, the wall will be renewed. To prevent risks, the quay wall has been cordoned off.

Directly behind the quay wall lies a large gas pipeline that can only be temporarily taken out of service during a limited period. In the winter period, this pipeline is needed to meet gas supply demands, as demand is higher then. In summer, this is not the case and the pipeline can be temporarily switched off without consequences for gas delivery. Residents will not experience any inconvenience during that period. Therefore, the work must take place between March and October 2026.

No impact on the Breda Jazz Festival

It was decided to start the work only after the major May events, such as the Breda Jazz Festival and the Spanjaardsgat Festival. These can therefore proceed as usual.

For the Harbor Festivals, it is different. At that time, space is needed for the work. This means that some places normally used by the Harbor Festivals for pontoons and parts of the program will not be available. As a result, the repair may affect the setup or scale of this event. Additionally, Swim to Fight Cancer and the Lichtsloepenparade are also scheduled in the harbor during this period. They may also need to make some adjustments for the work.

Working together to see what is possible

The municipality is in talks with all organizers. Once the planning is further developed, possibilities will be explored together to allow everything to proceed as smoothly as possible within the available space.

The work is expected to have minimal impact on taxi stands. During the day, there may temporarily be fewer spots, but during evenings out, the taxi stand will largely function normally.
