Johan de Wittlaan Closed to Traffic
In the early morning of Monday, April 14, the municipality of Den Haag will start closing the Johan de Wittlaan. By 07:00, the road will be completely closed to motorized traffic. Last week, lanes next to the median were already closed. Please account for extra travel time and detours during the closure of the Johan de Wittlaan. The Johan de Wittlaan will reopen in early August.
Den Haag will host the NATO summit on June 24 and 25. This summit will take place at the World Forum on Johan de Wittlaan. Due to the scale of the event, temporary buildings will be placed next to the World Forum. This will affect the accessibility of the surrounding area.
Shops, museums, and associated hospitality venues in the neighborhoods around Johan de Wittlaan will remain easily accessible.
Detours
The municipality has had extensive contact with businesses, residents organizations, hospitality businesses, museums, schools, and shopkeeper associations regarding the closure and the accessibility of the surrounding neighborhoods. Many of their requests have been incorporated into the mobility plan.
In the first weeks, traffic disruption is expected to be the greatest. After that, it is anticipated that travelers will adapt to alternative routes. Therefore, the municipality advises to leave the car at home where possible and to use other modes of transport, such as bicycles or public transport.
Those who still travel by car are advised to use navigation or check www.denhaag.nl/johandewittlaan for the latest information on detours.
Other means of transport
For pedestrians and (moped) cyclists, the Johan de Wittlaan will remain accessible. However, the foot and bike path on the side of the World Forum will be closed. Walking and cycling can only occur on the opposite side of the road. (Moped) cyclists from Scheveningseweg will be redirected via Eisenhowerlaan and Statenlaan to President Kennedylaan. Pedestrians and (moped) cyclists can continue to cross at Adriaan Goekooplaan, except when this is temporarily not possible for safety reasons. Traffic controllers will be present to guide traffic.
Public transport travelers will not be affected by the closure. HTM bus lines 21 and 28 and tram lines 1, 10, and 17 will continue their normal routes.
Eisenhowerlaan
The Eisenhowerlaan, between Johan de Wittlaan and Prins Mauritslaan, will become partly car-free. A barrier will be placed to prevent traffic from entering this street from Johan de Wittlaan. Destination traffic will still have access. Thanks to this measure, (moped) cyclists will have more space and safety. The other parts of Eisenhowerlaan will remain accessible to vehicles.
Destination Traffic to Surrounding Neighborhoods
• The neighborhoods Zorgvliet and Duinoord will remain accessible via the route Groot Hertoginnelaan and Stadhouderslaan.
• The neighborhoods Staten- and Geuzenkwartier will remain accessible via the route Professor B.M. Teldersweg and Scheveningseweg. The shopping areas are also easily accessible via this route.
