Between the Vliet and the highway lies a meadow area. In the coming period, this area, named Vlietweide, will be transformed into a nature reserve. Shallow water ponds will be created. Various trees, shrubs, and flowers will also be planted. This will make Vlietweide an attractive habitat for different species of birds, toads, and insects. The area will also be accessible to visitors. A walking path will be constructed, benches will be placed, and a playground will be set up.

Alderman Robert Barker (Public Space, Greenery, Animal Welfare): "It is unique that we can realize such a large nature reserve in a busy city like The Hague. In the coming period, this area will take more and more shape. In November, we will already start with the first trees, and I hope to soon hear the first birds singing here."

Nature Plan

The plan to transform this area into a nature reserve originates from The Hague's coalition agreement and comes from a plan by residents and the nature association AVN. Vlietweide is one of seven places where the municipality will give more space to nature in the coming period.
Alderman Barker: "Nature is under pressure. It is important that nature also has space in The Hague. With various plans, we ensure that different plants, insects, birds, and other animals also have a place in The Hague."

Tree Planting and Playground

On Sunday, November 16, 2025, during Climate Week, work in Vlietweide will start with the planting of trees. In May 2026, the other works will start, such as the construction of water features, walking paths, and playgrounds. The renewed Vlietweide will be ready by the end of 2026.

Nearly two thousand households will be informed about the plans this week. In addition, they will be asked to vote for their favorite playground. More information can be found at https://www.hethaagsegroen.nl/vlietweide (External link)
