Water Board Vallei and Veluwe has detected blue-green algae in the Kraaksvijver. The blue-green algae form a thin floating layer on the water. Blue-green algae develop from so-called cyanobacteria that grow towards the light in stagnant water at high temperatures in nutrient-rich water. You can recognize blue-green algae in the water by the green-blue haze that lies on the surface. The Municipality of Ede will place warning signs.

Public Health

People who come into contact with the water can develop skin rashes and gastrointestinal problems. This can happen if water is swallowed or if one comes into contact with the blue-green algae through the skin or eyes. For those who do come into contact with the water, it is sufficient to shower well afterwards. Small children are more vulnerable as they often ingest relatively more water than adults. Animals that drink the water can become seriously ill or even die. If dogs become ill, it is advisable to inform the veterinarian that the animal has been in contact with blue-green algae.

Warning Signs

The municipality will place warning signs by the pond.

  • Avoid contact with the water: water with blue-green algae is unsuitable for swimming; boating and fishing are also strongly discouraged by the water board and municipality.
  • Ensure that dogs do not swim in the ditch or drink from the water.
