Botulism has been found in the pond along the A12. This concerns the pond near Lukkien. Several dead ducks and swans have been removed recently.

The municipality and Water Authority Vallei and Veluwe advise against coming into contact with dead animals or the water in which dead animals are located. Pets can also become ill or die from the poison produced by the botulism bacterium.

Every summer, cases of botulism occur, a poisoning that can be fatal to waterfowl, but also to other animals. Botulism mainly occurs in shallow waterways during warm weather. The temperature of the water quickly rises above 20° Celsius, at which point the botulism bacterium becomes active. The poison from this bacterium paralyzes the muscles of waterfowl and fish. The carcasses of these animals then become a source of contamination.

Employees of the municipality or the water authority will remove sick and dead fish and waterfowl as soon as possible.
