On Thursday 29 January, by order of Mayor René Verhulst of Ede, a house on the Eikelakkers in Ede was closed due to a violation of the Opium Act.

Police investigation revealed that drug trafficking took place in the house. Subsequently, a police investigation was initiated. During such an investigation, the police, Public Prosecution Service, and municipality cooperate to follow the criminal process, each taking responsibility within their role. The municipality handles the administrative law process. This led Mayor René Verhulst to decide to close the property from 29 January for a duration of 4 months. During these 4 months, no one may enter the property, not even the owner.

Combating organized crime, where the underworld and upper world mix, so-called undermining, is one of the key safety priorities of the mayor of Ede. Producing and trading drugs is an example of organized crime. Given the risk to the living environment, strict measures are taken. The mayor finds it important that everyone is aware of the dangers and risks associated with producing and trading drugs.
