On January 6, the Council of State lifted the provisional measure, meaning the zoning plan for the Koning Davidschool is no longer suspended. In simple terms: the zoning plan has come into effect, allowing the procedure for the environmental permit to continue.

With the adoption of the zoning plan in January 2025, the municipal council already approved the construction of the school and gymnasium, indicating that the objections weigh less than the importance of realizing the school. Several objectors then went to the Council of State (RvS). In May, the RvS made a provisional ruling, suspending the zoning plan due to the substantiation regarding the nature permit (nitrogen). The municipality subsequently submitted additional substantiation to the Council of State. In early December, a hearing was held with this positive ruling as a result.

Alderman de Pater: “I think this is a really good start to 2026. It is necessary that the school can be built quickly, the need is very great. And we were also frustrated at city hall that it did not go faster, but at the same time it is a nice system we have in this country. People have the opportunity to object and then go to court or in this case the Council of State. In this case, with the additional substantiation, we were able to demonstrate that the school and gymnasium were already properly assessed in 2015 and thus fall under the scope of the nature permit for the Kazerneterreinen from 2015 and no new nature permit needs to be applied for. That would have caused real delays.”

Koning Davidschool

The Koning Davidschool is currently located at Ceelman van Ommerenweg but has wanted to move for years. The school has grown, like other primary schools in Ede-East. They face waiting lists, overcrowded classrooms, temporary buildings, and traffic congestion. With the arrival of the Koning Davidschool at the barracks site, not only a new school will be created, but also a gymnasium will be built.
