We are experimenting with the issue of charging and reconfiguring parking spaces in the street. Residents are asked to park their cars in a parking square at the edge of the neighborhood.

Councilor Rik Thijs (Public Space, Climate, and Energy): “We want people to experience the impact of parking their car in a parking square - possibly with charging facilities in the future - and then walking home. The parking space in the street can then be redesigned, for example, with more greenery or a social function.”

Participating Streets

All neighborhood residents had the opportunity to register their street for this experiment. The Anna Paulownastraat and the Hendrik Casimirstraat gathered enough support and will further develop this. The parking square will be located at the intersection of Sophia van Wurtemberglaan - Willem de Rijkelaan, on existing parking spaces.

Initiative from the Neighborhood 

Three years ago, some neighborhood residents approached the municipality with the question of whether charging in Vonderkwartier could be done differently. In a way that better fits the neighborhood and adds value. For example, by looking more broadly at how we want to deal with mobility, energy, greenery, and other themes in the neighborhood.

Also, from the municipal charging policy, there arose a need to gain knowledge of, and experiment with, the integration of charging in neighborhoods. Therefore, we embraced this initiative and have further developed it together with the neighborhood over the past year. We are being assisted by a research agency. In this experiment, the experiences of the residents are particularly important.

Next Steps

This trial in Vonderkwartier is the first step of a long-term approach. During the preparations with the neighborhood, more solutions for charging were proposed. We may explore those later. The experiment in August is the first opportunity to gain experiences.
