Municipality of Eindhoven and Interconnect Services BV, owner of a Data & Cloud Center, are entering into a cooperation agreement for the supply of data heat.
Councilor Rik Thijs (Climate and Energy): “By using sustainable data heat, the municipality can gradually reduce the use of the bio-energy plant in Meerhoven.” At the same time, the use of data heat ensures the reliability of heat supply to the Meerhoven heat network. The data heat comes from thousands of servers running on 100% Dutch green electricity. This implements policy to gradually remove biomass from the energy mix of Eindhoven. Biomass is a transitional fuel on the way to a fully sustainable energy supply in Eindhoven by 2050.
CEO Rob Stevens of Interconnect: “A second sustainability measure is that with the applied technical solution, sustainable cold can be supplied to the Data & Cloud Center. This saves energy that would otherwise be needed to produce sufficient cooling.” An important condition for using data heat is the availability of the necessary electricity to bring the data heat to the right temperature for the heat network using heat pumps.
A proposal for the investments required to realize the use of data heat will be presented to the Council. This funding is needed to definitively start using data heat.
