On Thursday, October 16, Eindhoven reached the milestone of 250,000 inhabitants. The city has grown significantly in recent years, with an average increase of nearly 3,000 residents per year. In 1999, Eindhoven had 200,000 inhabitants, and in 2016, the 225,000th resident was welcomed.
The population growth in Eindhoven can be explained by two factors: a positive birth balance and (internal and international) migration. Besides people moving to Eindhoven from other Dutch cities, a significant part of the increase in recent years comes from the rise in international students, labor migrants, and knowledge workers.
Growing Economy
The population growth is closely linked to the economic development of Brainport Eindhoven. This region has a strong concentration of innovative companies, knowledge institutions, and high-tech industry. This development attracts talent both nationally and internationally and strengthens the labor market.
Looking Ahead
The citys growth offers opportunities but also requires attention to the living environment.
“Reaching 250,000 inhabitants shows that Eindhoven is attractive to many people from both home and abroad,” said Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem. “This growth offers opportunities for the city but also requires us to keep looking ahead. We must ensure that everyone can live, work, and participate here comfortably.”
