Starting in May, The Green Bus will travel through Eindhoven with a clear mission: more green front gardens in the city. Residents of Woensel-Zuid can register for a free front garden until the end of October. Gardeners Herman and Frank will work on a maximum of four front gardens per day on Wednesdays and Fridays.
As part of Eindhoven the Greenest, this project offers residents the chance to have their front garden (maximum 4 m2) greened at no cost. The gardeners will remove tiles and sand, bring in fresh potting soil, and plant a mix of local, well-growing plants. Residents only need to be present during the appointment - and a cup of coffee is appreciated.
Benefits of a Green Front Garden
A green front garden contributes to a more pleasant living environment, more biodiversity, and social connection in the street. Green streets also provide cooling in the summer. They are attractive to bees and butterflies. And they look much more inviting than a completely paved street.
Councilor Rik Thijs (Greening and Climate) is pleased with the initiative in the city: By collaborating with housing corporations and tenant representation, we make greening not only visible but also feasible for everyone. In this way, we are working towards neighborhoods that are greener, more livable, and more connected.
Plants from the Region
The planting will be tailored to the location of the garden (sun or shade) and comes from the so-called 40 of 040 plant list: a selection of plants that are locally grown or thrive well in Eindhoven soil.
Residents of the following Eindhoven neighborhoods are eligible:
Eckartdal, Oude Gracht (East and West), Oude Toren, Generalenbuurt, Woenselse Watermolen, Hondsheuvels, Gildebuurt, Hemelrijken, Limbeek (North and South), Woensel-West, Kronehoef, Mensfort, Rapenland, and the Barrier.
Registration and Planning
Residents can easily register via this calendar. The action runs until the end of October and takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays. A maximum of four gardens will be tackled each day. More information about the project can be found at Eindhoven Sustainable or on the page at The Positive Energy Café.
About the Initiative
Eindhoven the Greenest is a project of the Sustainability Pact Eindhoven: a collaboration between the municipality of Eindhoven, housing corporations thuis, Trudo, Wooninc., and Woonbedrijf, and tenant representation PEK (Platform Eindhoven Customer Councils). Together they are committed to a greener, more sustainable city.
