The Municipality of Eindhoven is taking the next step in promoting sustainable shared mobility with a pilot around so-called bidirectional electric shared cars. In collaboration with the car-sharing provider MyWheels, smart charging stations will be installed at 50 locations in the city. These can charge electric shared cars and supply power back to the electricity grid.

Bidirectional shared cars stand out because they can give energy back to the grid. They contribute to balancing the energy grid and reducing grid congestion and charging costs. This makes shared mobility not only more attractive and affordable but also supports the transition to a more stable and sustainable energy grid. Additionally, these shared cars promote less car ownership - leading to more efficient use of public space - and cleaner air in the city.

More livable and sustainable

Councilor Robert Strijk (Mobility) explains: With this pilot, we are focusing on smart technology that contributes to both reliable shared mobility and a stable energy grid. Bidirectional shared cars help us make the city more livable and sustainable, and that is exactly what we stand for in Eindhoven.

Fixed car-sharing spots

Starting from late 2025, the first bidirectional charging stations and electric shared cars from MyWheels will be operational in Eindhoven, starting from fixed car-sharing spots. This week, residents of the first 14 locations are being informed about the fact that these innovative charging stations with bidirectional shared cars will be placed near them.
