The Municipality of Eindhoven, ProRail, NS, the province of North Brabant and the national government have chosen a preferred alternative for the new public transport hub Eindhoven. This marks an important step for the region towards a train and bus station ready for the future and the growing number of travelers.
This new public transport hub will be the entrance and hub of Eindhoven and the Brainport region. Our current (bus) station is outdated and too small, but with the new underground bus station - connected to the train station - we are truly making a change, says alderman Stijn Steenbakkers (Brainport and Eindhoven Knoop XL).
During rush hour, about 200 buses per hour will run here towards the city and region. And with the two-level bicycle parking, in addition to the 5400 spaces on the south side, there will be another 7900 bicycle parking spots. Furthermore, a modern station hall will be built and more greenery will be added to the now paved square. This creates a place where our residents and visitors can travel and stay comfortably and efficiently. Thanks to the Brainport and Beethoven deals and cooperation with our partners, we are making this huge project possible. Together we invest in better regional, national and international accessibility.
The Brainport region is growing, the public transport hub Eindhoven grows along
More and more people live, work and travel in Eindhoven and the Brainport region. It is expected that by 2040 about 150,000 people will use public transport around Eindhoven Central station daily. Much more than the current (bus) station can handle.
This is not only an important milestone for the accessibility of Eindhoven, but for the accessibility of all Brabant, says deputy Stijn Smeulders. The new bus station under Eindhoven Central will be the beating heart of our new southeast bus concession. The place where thousands of travelers depart, arrive or transfer every day. This creates space for urban development in the heart of our largest city and makes the region more accessible. This way, public transport becomes an attractive way of traveling for even more people in Brabant.
New public transport hub Eindhoven
To facilitate the expected growth of the city and the Brainport region, a new public transport hub Eindhoven will be realized. The first elaboration of the plan, also called the preferred alternative, consists of:
- An underground bus station with three island platforms, space for 34 stops and buses get a fixed stop per line. This makes traveling clearer and more comfortable.
- Five bus tunnels that exit onto John F. Kennedylaan, Veldmaarschalk Montgomerylaan, Vestdijktunnel, Boschdijktunnel and in Fellenoord between the intersections with Boschdijk and Boschdijktunnel.
- An above-ground bus buffer of approx. 4000 m2. This is currently located on John F. Kennedylaan. The exact location will be determined in the upcoming planning and study phase.
- A two-level indoor bicycle parking located on Vestdijk. On the ground floor there is space for special bicycles, such as shared bikes and non-standard bikes. Together with the bicycle parking on the south side of the station, there will be capacity for about 13,000 bicycles.
- A modern station hall that will be connected to the hall for the bus station, so travelers can transfer dry and easily.
- A large station square on the north side with approx. 3500 m2 of greenery and a pleasant public space to stay.
- The new public transport hub Eindhoven also has the ambition to expand the station with one or two platforms, extend the existing freight siding and adjust the tracks west of Eindhoven Central. This way the station area can grow with the city and the region.
From station area to lively city district
By realizing the underground bus station, space will also be created on the north side of the public transport hub for the construction of new homes where the current bus stops are located. In the area development Fellenoord, part of the Knoop XL station area, more than 6000 homes will be built. The station area changes from a place you travel through to a lively city district where people live, work and stay comfortably.
The surrounding neighborhoods and the rest of Eindhovens center will be better connected. Walking routes will become more logical, crossings safer and the area more pleasant to use on foot, by bike or shared mobility. Travelers, residents, workers, students and visitors will come together here naturally. This way the station remains not only an important mobility point for the city and region, but also becomes a vibrant meeting place.
Next step
The preferred alternative for the new underground bus station, bicycle parking and station hall will be submitted for decision to the Eindhoven city council on February 10. With a positive decision, the next step can be taken, including further elaboration of the preliminary design and the final design. It is expected that from 2030 the first steps of the realization of the public transport hub Eindhoven can start.
