The board of the mayor and aldermen has drawn up the final design for the redevelopment of a large part of Meerwijk. On November 27, 2025, the municipal council will make a decision about this.
Much will change in Meerwijk in the coming years. The streets will be redesigned both above and below ground. This is necessary because the sewer is outdated and the streets have sunk. The work will make Meerwijk ready for the future. The design chooses sustainable materials. The design also includes more greenery, better water retention, and play and meeting places.
Principles for the Redevelopment
The redevelopment of Meerwijk will proceed in phases. The designs for the northern and central residential neighborhoods have already been established. The Spoelderstraat and Rousseaustraat are now complete, and work has begun on Jan Ligthartstraat.
The current final design focuses on the southern and western neighborhoods of Meerwijk. The main roads Stresemannlaan, Braillelaan, and Briandlaan are also included in this design. The work will start in 2028 and is expected to last until 2032.
Contributing to Plans for the Neighborhood
Residents have contributed to the plans for the neighborhood. Their ideas about safety, greenery, play, and meeting places form the basis for this final design, along with the municipal goals from the master plan. The responses from residents to the preliminary design have also been addressed and incorporated into this final design where possible.
Some Examples:
- The Meerwijkpad will be wider. Cyclists can safely pass walkers on the path. To show that it is primarily a walking path, it will not be laid in asphalt but in so-called semi-permeable materials, such as shells or stones. A traffic sign will also be placed: cycling allowed, scooters prohibited.
- In Jan van Zutphenstraat, a row of parking spaces has been changed on the side of the apartment building. This creates 4 additional parking spaces.
- A part of Alphons Ariënsstraat has become two-way traffic. This way, residents from that street do not have to first drive through Heldringstraat to exit the neighborhood.
Decision of the Municipal Council
On October 30, the management committee will discuss this final design. The municipal council will make a decision on November 27, 2025.
