On Friday, October 24, 2025, Alderman Eva de Raadt and ice club secretary Cora Hulsebosch opened the new ice rink at IJsbaan Haarlem. The indoor rink has doubled in size. A large tent now covers the entire field.

The new covering protects against sun, wind, and rain. As a result, energy consumption remains the same.

Various sports

In Haarlem, everyone should be able to play sports and exercise, regardless of age, background, orientation, or disability. The ice rink plays an important role in this and expands the citys sports offerings. Sports include long track skating, short track, figure skating, ice hockey, bandy, Bavarian curling, and adapted (wheelchair) skating.

Many Haarlem primary school students come skating with their class every year. It is a day they look forward to. Fie (11 years old): “I really like it! Now we have extra space. I hope we go again soon.” To make skating possible for students from Schalkwijk, transportation to the rink is paid for by the municipality.

Alderman de Raadt: “In Haarlem, we are always looking for extra space for sports and play. We are very happy with these extra square meters. That the ice rink, as an independent foundation, has succeeded in significantly enlarging the ice surface is a remarkable achievement that we will enjoy in Haarlem for a long time.”

Free trial lessons

Sports clubs at the ice rink often offer free trial lessons. An overview is available on the IJsbaan Haarlem website. To make skating accessible to everyone, Haarlemmers with a HaarlemPas receive a 50% discount on a ticket. This way, everyone can skate on the new ice rink.
