Many people in Haarlem use bicycles. This is good for the city, but in busy areas it causes crowded sidewalks. Therefore, we have clear rules for parking bicycles in the city center. These rules mainly apply to places where many people walk and where bicycle parking facilities are nearby.
Where you can park your bicycle depends on how long you stay in the city. For short visits, there is space to park your bike on the street in a designated spot or rack. If you stay longer, park your bike in a free bicycle parking facility. Your bike will be safe and dry there, for example while shopping, working, or attending an appointment.
New Parking Facilities
Two new bicycle parking facilities will be opened. At the end of 2026, a new bicycle parking facility will open on Kruisstraat. At the beginning of 2027, the bicycle parking in the basement of the former V&D will open. Alderman Bas van Leeuwen: “Haarlem is a bicycle city. This is strengthened by giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists in the city center and investing in bicycle parking facilities.”
Bicycle Parking Ban
At Stationsplein, Hortusplein, and Houtplein, there is a bicycle parking ban. This means that bicycles may only be parked there in a designated spot or rack. From February 24, this also applies to the southern part of Grote Houtstraat up to Proveniersplein.
Bicycle Depot
If your bicycle is parked outside a rack or designated spot in an area with a bicycle parking ban, we will take the bicycle to the bicycle depot. You can retrieve your bicycle there for a fee.
Space on the Street
By parking bicycles in a facility, walking routes remain free, also for people with reduced mobility and parents with strollers. The street becomes less cluttered and there is more space for greenery and seating. This keeps the city safe, accessible, and pleasant for everyone.
