Criminals sometimes misuse business premises for drug production. To alert entrepreneurs in the Waarderpolder about signs of drug labs, police and enforcement distributed special ecstasy scent cards last week.

The scent card gave many entrepreneurs new insight. By rubbing over the patch, an anise-like smell is released, characteristic of ecstasy production. “Many entrepreneurs did not know this smell yet and found it surprising,” says Kelly Hupsel, undermining safety manager at the Municipality of Haarlem.

Recognizing smells

Other signs of drug production were also discussed. Hupsel: “Some types of drug production release a strong chemical or sweet smell. This smell is sometimes masked with the scent of fabric softener or detergent. Many entrepreneurs did not know this yet, but they found it interesting to hear about.”

Reporting signals

Besides recognizing signals, the conversation also covered reporting signals. Some entrepreneurs do not know that if you suspect drug production, the threshold to report is low. “In case of doubts or suspicions, you can already contact us. Professionals will then investigate,” explains Hupsel. “Early reporting helps prevent dangerous situations, such as fire and explosion risks due to chemical substances.”
