Criminals sometimes misuse business premises for drug production. To alert entrepreneurs in the Waarderpolder about signs of drug labs, police and enforcement distributed special ecstasy scent cards last week.

By rubbing the patch on the scent card, an anise-like smell is released. A scent characteristic of ecstasy production. “Many entrepreneurs did not know this and found it surprising,” says Kelly Hupsel, undermining safety manager at the Municipality of Haarlem.

Recognizing Scents

Other signs of drug production were also discussed. Hupsel: “Some types of drug production emit a strong chemical or sweet smell. This smell is sometimes masked with the scent of fabric softener or detergent.”

Reporting Signs

Besides recognizing signs, the conversation also covered reporting those signs. Hupsel: You can report if you have doubts or suspicions about drug production. Professionals will then investigate the report further. Early reporting helps prevent dangerous situations, such as fire and explosion risks from chemical substances.
