We have designated 9 buildings from the post-war reconstruction period (circa 1940-1965) as municipal monuments. This way, we preserve an important part of our citys history.

The buildings show how Haarlem recovered and looked ahead after the war. They were built with attention to light, space, and practical use. Examples include the library on Gasthuisstraat and the former harbor office on Spaarndamseweg.

Library and Harbor Office

The library is built in brutalist style. This is a robust and simple style from the 1950s and 1960s. This style is rare in Haarlem and stands out among the historic buildings in the city center.

The art on the facade of the harbor office is striking. There hangs a bronze plaque by sculptor Marianne Gobius.

The other buildings designated as monuments are:

•             Apartment building in Kleverpark neighborhood - Verspronckweg 325–339

•             Industrial building in Waarderpolder - Claes Tillyweg 2

•             Transformer station in Zuiderhout - Linnaeuslaan 19

•             Seal warehouse building in Centrum Nauwe Appelaarsteeg 1–3

•             Mendel College in Noord - Pim Mulierlaan 4

•             Beatrix School in the Ramplaankwartier - Blinkertpad 3

•             Primary school De Dolfijn in Noord - Gijsbrecht van Aemstelstraat 118

With this monument status, we prevent demolition and protect the cultural-historical value. This way, the story of Haarlem remains visible in the city.
