We want everyone in Haarlem to be themselves. However, discrimination still occurs. Therefore, we have established a new action plan to prevent discrimination and unequal treatment.
Reporting discrimination is important, but few people do so. We are making the Discriminatie.nl reporting point better known. We do this with clear information and cooperation with key persons in various communities. They help residents of Haarlem find the right path. We also ensure better aftercare following a report.
Collaboration in a network
We are starting an ally network. Organizations work together here. They can share signals and devise actions together. This strengthens trust and ensures fixed cooperation.
Attention to the past
The action plan also pays attention to the colonial past. We support Platform Koloniaal Haarlem and Stichting Keti Koti Haarlem in creating a slavery monument and organizing an annual commemoration. The monument makes the slavery past visible and gives space to stories of descendants.
Alderman Eva de Raadt: “Discrimination is a deeply rooted social problem that requires structural attention. In Haarlem, everyone must feel safe and accepted. I therefore find it very important that we work hard on this and I want to call on all residents of Haarlem to also stand up against discrimination. Because only together can we truly counter discrimination and exclusion.”
Next steps
On February 5, 2026, we will discuss the action plan in the Society committee. Afterwards, we will determine how to implement it. Would you like to read the entire action plan? View it at Action plan prevention discrimination 2026 - 2028 (link is external)
