Young people in Haarlem turning 18 will receive a special birthday card from the municipality starting January 2026. This card prepares them for the responsibilities they must manage when they turn 18.

Many things come at young people when they turn 18. Not only health insurance, but also DigiD, healthcare allowance, student finance, their own bank account, and registering for rental housing.

The card is intended to inform young people about which matters are now their responsibility and to prevent them from getting into financial trouble. For example, being alert when making purchases with the option to pay later. 

Start without financial worries

Alderman Diana van Loenen of Social Affairs handed over the first birthday card on Thursday, November 20. Your 18th birthday should be a celebration and not the start of financial worries. This special birthday card has a handy checklist to clearly show which important financial matters need to be arranged, said van Loenen.

Help with arrangements

The card also refers to people who can help if the young person cannot manage on their own. For example, there is a Fix-your-matters expert at the library. Young people can go there with questions about allowances, DigiD, or difficult letters. Call or send a message to 06 - 307 2223.
