What You Need to Know About the Holidays and New Years Eve

The municipality is closed on: 

• Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
• Friday, December 26 (Boxing Day)
• Thursday, January 1 (New Years Day)

On Monday, January 5, 2026, the public hall opens at 10:30 AM instead of 9:00 AM due to the New Years breakfast for all employees. From 10:30 AM, the municipality is also reachable by phone again.

From Tuesday, January 6, you can also visit the public hall without an appointment between 9:00 and 11:00 AM. For more information, see the news article Apply for a passport without an appointment 

Waste Collection

There is no collection of organic and duo containers on: 

• Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
• Friday, December 26 (Boxing Day)
• Thursday, January 1 (New Years Day)

There is an extra collection on Saturdays December 20 and 27 and January 3. More information about this can be found (per address) in the Waste Guide of Spaarnelanden(external link). 

Underground containers are always emptied, even during holidays. Collection appointments for bulky household waste and the Recycletas are not possible between Thursday, December 25, 2025, and Thursday, January 1, 2026. 

Containers During New Years Eve

Spaarnelanden closes several trash cans and containers from Thursday, December 28 to Monday, January 1 to prevent firework damage.

Environmental Center

The Environmental Center is closed on: 

• Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
• Friday, December 26 (Boxing Day)
• Thursday, January 1 (New Years Day)

On Wednesday, December 24 and 31, the Environmental Center is open until 3:30 PM. On other days, the regular opening hours(external link). 

Fireworks

The use of fireworks is prohibited, as last year. It causes too much nuisance to people, animals, and nature. The use of Category F1 fireworks is allowed. This includes sparklers, Bengal fire, fountains, and party poppers. 

If you experience nuisance from fireworks, you can file a report.

New Years Reception 

On Monday, January 5, 2026, the municipal New Years reception will take place. All residents of Haarlem, relations, and acquaintances are warmly invited. The reception is from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Gravenzaal of the town hall at Grote Markt 2. No prior registration is required.

Christmas Tree Collection 

After the holidays, you can drop off your tree at the Environmental Center. Together with Spaarnelanden, we also organize a Christmas tree campaign. Children up to and including 15 years old can drop off Christmas trees on Wednesday, January 7 and Wednesday, January 14.  Read more about the Christmas tree campaign on the website of Spaarnelanden(external link).
