We have established the Heat Program 2026–2030. With this, we are working step by step towards a city without natural gas. The first neighborhoods will start in 2026.

The Netherlands is moving away from gas. In Haarlem, we aim to achieve this by 2040. To reach this goal, we are working together.

Alderman Berkhout: “In the Heat Program, we show how in Haarlem we can make all our homes and buildings future-proof in an affordable way, step by step. Together with residents, landlords, and entrepreneurs, we create a district heat plan for each neighborhood. Later this year, we will start discussions in the first neighborhoods.”

Affordable and sustainable heating

A district heat plan outlines the best heating method for the neighborhood and the necessary steps and support (such as subsidies and practical help). The new heating method must be affordable, feasible, and sustainable. Residents can always choose their own sustainable solution. Creating a district heat plan takes about 2 years. Afterwards, we decide together with the neighborhood when the transition will take place.

These neighborhoods are first in line

In the second half of 2026, preparations will begin in these neighborhoods: Archimedesbuurt, Erasmusbuurt, Zuiderpolder Noord, Zuiderpolder Zuid, De Krim (Te Zaanenkwartier), Schoterveenpolder and Kweektuinbuurt (Ter Kleefkwartier), Ramplaankwartier, Bloemenbuurt and Veldzigt (Duinwijk). Residents, institutions, and businesses in these neighborhoods will receive a letter after the summer about how we want to engage in conversation.

What you can do now

Even if your neighborhood is scheduled later, you can already take measures to save energy. This ensures more comfortable living and lower energy consumption.
Think of sealing gaps, insulating roofs, facades or floors, energy-efficient lighting, and electric cooking. Various schemes and subsidies are available.
