We have evaluated the temporary summer square ’t Gat in the Grote Houtstraat. Visitors, entrepreneurs, and residents responded very positively. Therefore, the council is initiating an exploration for a permanent green meeting place at this location and similar places in the city center.
Since May 15, 2025, a temporary green square was located in front of the Verwey Hall in the Grote Houtstraat. Many people used the square to pause, eat something, or talk with each other. Visitors gave their opinions via a QR code. We received 73 responses, all positive. The most common question was: why is it temporary?
The temporary square was an experiment conducted within the covenant in which we collaborate with (hospitality) entrepreneurs and residents. They also indicated that the green space was seen as a valuable addition. Extra seating and greenery invite visitors to stay longer and make the city center more attractive.
Successful Experiment
Because the experiment was successful, the council is starting an exploration to make ’t Gat a permanent green meeting place. We are also looking at whether other locations in the center are suitable for small squares. For example, the courtyard of the library. Therefore, we have moved the plant containers from the summer square ’t Gat to this location.
