We need each other to let the Mestreechter Geis speak. Mayor Wim Hillenaar started 2025 with this message at a well-attended New Years reception. He spoke about the challenges and opportunities of the new year. The full speech can be read below.

  • Dear people,

Welcome and thank you for being here. The New Years reception in our town hall is a beautiful tradition. It is about more than exchanging good wishes; your presence shows your commitment to Maastricht. Thank you for coming.

2024 was a turbulent year, both globally and in our country. In Maastricht, we also feel the unrest over polarization, climate issues, and international security. We must be resilient and prepared for unexpected situations. The government campaign Denkvooruit.nl calls on everyone to work together: governments, businesses, knowledge institutions, social organizations, and citizens.

In 2024, we also saw hopeful moments. Maastricht is a vibrant city where residents collaborate, such as in the neighborhood theater Malpertuis and the Reuzenstoet. The municipality creates conditions for a strong community. One example is the housing plan for secondary education, with a 140 million euro investment.

We are building a new district on the Trega site, together with residents and entrepreneurs. The Brightlands Health Campus has been recognized as an important innovation center, crucial for our economy.

Our joint call for international higher education has been heard in The Hague. Despite challenges, we work together for the future. In Maastricht, we are resilient and look ahead.

We all need you to tackle the significant challenges, such as securing the Einstein Telescope and maintaining our cultural position. Ensuring security for all remains a priority; we must pay attention to the vulnerable in our society.

Let us look out for each other and let the Mestreechter Geis speak. Let us be resilient and caring for one another in 2025.

I wish you all a good and healthy 2025. Let us toast together!

    Happy New Year!
