The 17 fountains in the city are back in operation. They were not functioning because work had been done on them recently. They received a makeover. Now they are ready for the future. The company that worked on the fountains will also maintain them for the next 15 years. On Thursday, April 10, councilor John Aarts officially opened the fountain in the Market.
Between September 2022 and March 2025, the fountains in Maastricht underwent significant renovations. The installations no longer met safety, hygiene, and technical standards. They were shut down. With an investment of 1.2 million euros and an increased annual maintenance budget, everything is now in order, and the fountains are ready for the future.
The company Rots Maatwerk Onderhoud BV was awarded the contract to carry out the work through a European tender. The company will also handle maintenance for the next 15 years. This includes new water purification systems, safe electricity, lighting, and the maintenance of natural stone.
Councilor John Aarts: “Water is part of Maastricht. Fountains bring life to the city; people stop to take photos, and children play with the water. It’s wonderful that we have been able to restore this and are now ready for the future.”
