93 additional trees in Wyck, Céramique and the city center.

Maastricht is taking a major step towards becoming a climate-resilient city. With an investment of 1.1 million euros, the municipality will plant 93 new trees at 18 locations in the city center, Wyck, and Céramique. The tree plan contributes to the ambition to be a city resistant to heat and water nuisance by 2040.

Why greening?

More greenery in the city center is a widely supported wish of residents and entrepreneurs. Trees provide cooling during hot summers, absorb rainwater, improve air quality and biodiversity, and make the city more attractive for residents and visitors.

Challenges and choices

Greening a historic and compact city center is complex. Available space is limited and the underground is full of cables and pipes. After careful research, 18 locations were selected where trees can be planted. This means that 64 parking spaces will disappear, mainly in Wyck and the city center. The municipality is considering where it is necessary to convert combination and paid parking spaces into permit-holder parking spaces.

Part of a broader approach

This tree plan does not stand alone. The municipality has been working for some time on structural greening of the city center. In 2025, among others, Lakenweversplein, Misericordeplein, Maagdendries, and parts of Wilhelminasingel were greened. In 2026, among others, Jekerkwartier and Stokstraatkwartier will follow. Adding temporary greenery is also part of this approach.

Alderman Mackus: With this tree plan, we make Maastricht greener, healthier, and more attractive. It is an investment in the future of our city and in the quality of life for everyone.

Planning and participation

The implementation starts early 2026 in Céramique, followed by Wyck in spring and the city center in autumn. Residents and entrepreneurs will be informed via door-to-door letters, the municipal website, and 2 walk-in meetings:

  • December 11, 2025: Wyck and Céramique
  • February 2026: City center (west side of Maas) - date to be announced
