Maastricht performs well in waste separation and raw material reuse. A national study (the NVRD Benchmark*) shows that we score better on almost all aspects than comparable municipalities. We even have the lowest household waste per inhabitant among all municipalities in our group. This is a great compliment to everyone who separates waste properly!
How are we doing?
The municipality was compared with 29 other cities with many apartments and flats (between 30 and 49% of the homes). The researchers looked at environment, costs, services, and organization.
Figures for 2024:
- Household waste: 357 kilos per inhabitant (average: 440 kilos)
- Residual waste: 104 kilos per inhabitant (average: 166 kilos)
- Waste separation: 71% (average: 62%)
- Recycling: 57% (average: 51%)
On the way to 90% in 2030
Thanks to your efforts, we achieve great results, but we are not there yet.
By 2030, we want 90% of all raw materials to be of good quality.
Therefore, we will continue to work in the coming years on less waste, better separation, and more recycling!
Why this is important
The better we separate waste, the more raw materials we can reuse.
This means we need to incinerate less, save money, and emit less CO₂.
Together, step by step, we ensure a city where we properly offer and reuse raw materials instead of throwing them away.
*The NVRD Benchmark is an annual study in which municipalities compare their waste performance. This way, they learn from each other and improve their policies.
