From November 25 to December 10, Maastricht participates in Orange the World. This campaign raises awareness about violence against women. This is urgently needed.

In the Netherlands, every 8 days a woman is killed because she is a woman. 1 in 2 women experiences (sexual) unwanted behavior. And 1 in 3 women experiences physical, psychological, or sexual violence in her life. As a municipality, we find this unacceptable. That is why we clearly show these weeks that this must stop. The Orange the World flags hang at the City Hall. And the footbridge at Mosae Forum turns orange for a week.

On Friday, November 28, Mayor Hillenaar, Alderman Bastiaens, Alderman Pas, and Alderman Mackus met with 2 womens organizations: the Soroptimists and Zonta Mergelland. These groups held an action at the Market. They spoke together about safety for women.

Everyone must feel safe. By talking about it together, also at home, we can start change.

Stop violence against women.
