The investment is a major step for the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus and the Maastricht knowledge economy.

Funding for the approach to A2 exit 55 and Oeslingerbaan is finalized. The government is investing 19 million euros, supplemented by 19.7 million euros from the region, including 15 million euros from the Municipality of Maastricht. This allows the project to start solving traffic flow problems at this important location and structurally improve accessibility to the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus. This investment lays a solid foundation for further growth of the campus and the knowledge economy in Maastricht and South Limburg.

Why is adjustment of exit 55 necessary?

During the morning rush hour, traffic jams regularly occur at the exit, causing backups on the A2. This results in suboptimal use of the capacity of the King Willem-Alexander tunnel and also causes traffic jams north of the tunnel. To solve this bottleneck, not only the exit itself was considered but also the connection to the campus.

The package of measures consists of 4 parts:
1.    Additional lane on the exit (in coordination with ProRail)
2.    Doubling lanes towards Oeslingerbaan
3.    Increasing capacity on Oeslingerbaan
4.    Access road to new parking facilities of MUMC+ and UM.

Space for new business activity

The redesign also creates space for new business activities on locations currently used as parking lots. This strengthens the economic dynamics on the campus and contributes to the development of Maastrichts new manufacturing industry.

All measures belong together and must be implemented in cohesion to structurally and sustainably solve the current bottleneck. The total costs amount to 38.7 million euros. Planning and execution will still be established in an action plan.

Hubert Mackus, alderman for Economy: This contribution from the last Multi-Year Infrastructure, Space and Transport Program (MIRT) is an important step for Maastricht. We have consulted intensively with our partners to achieve this, resulting in this great outcome. It is not only a solution to an accessibility problem but also a solid basis to further build the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus and the knowledge economy in our city. The governments investment is also a clear recognition of the national importance of our campus and its role in innovation and new business activity. This creates space for growth, innovation, and thousands of jobs.

John Aarts, alderman for Mobility: The current situation causes daily delays and safety risks in the tunnel. With these measures, we improve traffic flow on the A2 and ensure sustainable access to Randwyck. This is a structural solution for now and the future.
