A movable viewing point has been placed on the dike in Itteren this week. It will travel to various locations in the River Park Maas Valley in Belgium and the Netherlands over the coming years. The viewing point will be there until April 2026. You can rest, enjoy the view, or start a walk.

The viewing point is now located in Itteren on the dike at ‘Op de Meer’. From this spot, you have a beautiful view over the Maas and Belgium across the way. Alderman Mackus is enthusiastic: “From this place, you literally look over the border. From the viewing point, you can see the Maas and the Belgian landscape on the other side. It emphasizes how closely our regions are connected – not only geographically but also in terms of nature, water, and experience. This initiative allows visitors to experience how the border fades here and how we form one Maas Valley together. Moreover, this nature-rich area, which plays an important buffering role for Maastricht, is still developing. The placement of this temporary structure is a good reason to come take a look.”

The structure – a kind of wooden grandstand about 3.5 meters high – is designed to blend into the landscape. It’s not about the building itself, but about the view. Visitors can rest, catch up, or start their walk. For Itteren, it was in Illikhoven (Echt-Susteren). And in a few months? Then the viewing point will move to the next Maas village, so another piece of River Park can be discovered.

The viewing point is part of the INTERREG project ‘Borderless Landscape Tourism’. The viewing point invites visitors to experience the cross-border nature in a unique way.

Curious? Then be sure to visit Itteren and walk up the dike at ‘Op de Meer’. You can stay updated on the next locations via www.rivierparkmaasvallei.eu.
