On Wednesday, October 22, the moment arrived: the official opening of the very first bicycle street in Overbetuwe. Mozartstraat in Elst has been completely renovated and now offers a safe, green, and sustainable space for cyclists. Alderman Wijnte Hol, together with residents and students from local schools, gave the starting signal for this new, future-oriented street adaptation.
Designed with residents
What makes this bicycle street extra special is that residents actively contributed to the design and layout. Their wish for a bicycle street was adopted. They were also able to vote on the type of trees. Alderman Hol: “The new layout will reduce car speeds. Previously, cars drove too fast here. Cyclists and pedestrians are vulnerable. A bicycle street provides more safety and hopefully encourages people to cycle more often. The residents were very involved and had good ideas. That’s only positive, because who knows better what is needed in a street than the people who live there?”
