Benthe Riemsdijk from Randwijk has been elected as the new childrens mayor for the coming year. On the morning of May 19, Benthe learned in a special way that she will be the new childrens mayor of the municipality of Overbetuwe. During a surprise moment at primary school Tuin 17 in Heteren, Mayor Patricia Hoytink-Roubos and the current childrens mayor Bente Tijssen personally brought the good news.
Children from group 7 of all primary schools in the municipality of Overbetuwe had the opportunity to apply for the role of childrens mayor. Nine enthusiastic candidates seized that opportunity with both hands. In their application letters, they told who they are, what concerns them, and why they want to make a difference for children in the municipality. Five children were invited for a personal interview, where they could further elaborate on their ideas and motivation. The selection committee consists of a council member, a policy officer, and the mayor.
An involved and enthusiastic childrens mayor
After inspiring conversations, Benthe was chosen as childrens mayor for the new school year. She stood out due to her concrete explanation of her ideas on topics that are important for children. Benthe believes it is important that children are treated equally and wants more attention for that at school, alongside the golden week and the anti-bullying week. She also finds sports and exercise important to stay fit and healthy. She wonders if something like the Heterun can also be organized in other villages of Overbetuwe. She would also like to set up more sports and craft activities so that children can get to know each other better. Additionally, she would like to see nature in the municipality greener and cleaner.
Festive farewell and a new beginning
On Thursday afternoon, June 12, we will bid a festive farewell to Bente Tijssen, who has fulfilled her role with great dedication over the past year. During this event, Benthe will be officially appointed as the new childrens mayor. On June 19, Bente and Benthe will visit the municipal council together: a nice moment to say goodbye and get to know each other. Bente Tijssen has actively worked on her priorities over the past year: improving playgrounds and strengthening the voice of children within the municipality. Her successor will take over the role of childrens mayor with fresh energy.
