The national government asks residents to prepare for 72 hours without electricity, water, or internet. Soon, every household will receive a Think Ahead booklet with practical tips. In this news article, you will read why preparation is important, what should be in an emergency kit, and where to get information during an emergency.
Why is preparation important?
Daily life often seems obvious: electricity, water, and internet are always available. In an emergency, this can suddenly change, for example due to:
- Storm, heavy rainfall, or flooding
- Prolonged power outage
- Extreme heat
Emergency services can respond quickly but are not everywhere at once. By preparing yourself, you can safely get through the first 72 hours.
What belongs in an emergency kit?
The Think Ahead booklet provides tips on what you can have as an emergency kit at home. Important items include:
- Water and non-perishable food for at least 3 days
- Emergency radio, flashlight, and extra batteries
- Blankets or warm clothing to stay warm
- Personal items such as medication, baby food, glasses, or important documents
- Food and water for pets
Store your kit in an easily accessible place and check every six months if everything is still usable.
How do I receive information during an emergency?
If phone and internet fail, you will receive important information via Omroep Gelderland, the emergency broadcaster for all of Gelderland. You can find Omroep Gelderland on 88.9 FM (Nijmegen region) or 89.1 FM (Arnhem region).
The Municipality of Overbetuwe is also considering how to reach its residents during an emergency. For example, through emergency support points in the municipality. We are also working on plans to be prepared for prolonged power outages.
Should I be worried?
You do not need to worry. Preparing does not mean there is an immediate threat. It is smart to think ahead and prepare yourself. This can be done with a few simple steps. This way, you help yourself and your surroundings.
