The Municipality of Overbetuwe, Brede School De Vogeltuin, and the village council have jointly created a plan to green the Flessestraat and improve traffic safety around the school. The implementation will start in the spring of 2026.
From Idea to Implementation
The idea for greening emerged a few years ago. In 2023, the sketch design won the Green Icon Challenge. Thanks to the prize money and a financial contribution from the municipality, the plan can now actually be executed.
Collaboration with Village and School
In early September, students, parents, teachers, and local residents participated in a meeting. Their ideas will be incorporated into the final design.
More Green and a Clearer Traffic Situation
The plan consists of two parts:
- More green: additional trees, shrubs, and perennials around the school and in the Flessestraat. A new dog park will also be added near Achterstraat, with a green appearance.
- Safe traffic: the traffic situation around the school will be made clearer with small interventions. Students and parents will see more clearly where they are allowed to cycle and drive. There will also be enough space for events, such as Kings Day.
Councilor Rik van den Dam: “Together with the village, we are taking an important step towards a greener and safer Flessestraat.”
Climate-Resistant and Safer
The measures make the environment better able to withstand changes in the climate, such as periods of drought or heavy rainfall. Moreover, the green design contributes to a pleasant living environment for local residents and school-going children.
