The Municipality of Overbetuwe plans to adjust its poverty policy starting in 2026. Due to a necessary budget cut of 6 million euros across the entire municipal budget, we unfortunately have to make sharp choices in all areas. While we currently have a generous poverty policy, parts of the policy will be changed. At the same time, the municipality will continue to provide assistance to residents who need it the most.
Simple Rules and More Clarity
The new poverty policy will apply one clear income limit: 110% of the social minimum. Those who fall below this threshold will gain access to multiple regulations simultaneously. This provides more clarity for residents and employees. By aligning income limits, a more transparent system will emerge.
The collective health insurance through Menzis will cease. Residents with high healthcare costs can now apply for a reimbursement. The Personal Minimum Budget will also be adjusted to better align with national regulations.
Better Assistance for Those Who Really Need It
Although fewer people will be able to use the regulations in the future, the group that still has the right will receive more targeted support. They will have to make fewer individual applications, receive better information, and more help with, for example, switching health insurance. Alderman Rik van den Dam: “We understand very well that these changes are daunting for residents. But we will continue to do what we can for those who need help the most. They will receive better and clearer assistance so that they get the support and resources they need to participate fully in society.”
Information for Residents
Residents currently using the regulations will receive a letter this week. This letter will outline what changes are being made and where they can go with questions. Information meetings will also be organized.
