The Municipality of Overbetuwe will update the list of monumental trees. In June, we will start in Zetten by checking special trees. After that, we will continue in the other villages of the municipality. The entire inspection round will take about six weeks.
During this period, you may see tree inspectors from the company IDverde walking through the neighborhood. Sometimes they will ring your doorbell to check a tree in your garden. They do this on behalf of the municipality.
What is a monumental tree?
A monumental tree is a tree of special value. For example, because the tree is very old, rare, or has a recognizable place in the village. We want to protect these trees well.
If a tree is on the monumental tree list, an environmental permit is required to cut it down. For trees that are not on the list, this is usually not necessary.
Note: according to the Environmental Act, you may never cut down a tree if there are birds nesting in it.
What are we going to do?
We will check:
- whether there are trees that belong on the monumental tree list, and
- how the trees that are already on the list are doing.
Some trees are on municipal land, others in residents gardens. Is your tree eligible for the list? Then you will automatically receive a notification from the municipality.
Why are large trees so important?
Large, mature trees are good for the environment and our living environment. They:
- provide cooling in the summer
- retain rainwater
- improve the air
- make the village recognizable and beautiful
A mature tree is much more valuable than a young tree. That is why we want to protect these trees, also for the generations after us.
