The Rotterdam housing corporations and municipality plan to build over 4,000 social rental homes in the next two years. Many of these homes will be built for students, young people, or the elderly. Building additional homes is necessary because many Rotterdam residents are looking for social rental housing.
The Rotterdam housing corporations, tenant organizations, and the municipality signed the performance agreements for 2026 and 2027 on Wednesday evening, January 21. These agreements outline how the parties collaborate on better and sustainable rental homes and livable neighborhoods in the city.
Also sustainability of rental homes
Housing corporations continue to improve the insulation quality and energy efficiency of their homes, prioritizing the worst energy labels: E, F, and G. By 2026–2027, the number of homes with an E, F, or G label must have decreased by over 3,000. The goal is to reduce energy consumption and energy costs for tenants. Furthermore, efforts will be made in the coming years to make all social rental homes gas-free by 2050. This heat transition must be affordable for corporations and tenants. Additionally, the corporations are investing nearly 70 million euros in addressing moisture, mold, lead pipes, asbestos, and fire safety of social rental homes.
Investing in livability
In 2026-2027, the Rotterdam housing corporations will spend at least 35 million euros on livability. This supports maintaining a clean, safe neighborhood and contributes to social interactions within residential areas. The municipality and corporations work together to tackle residential nuisance.
